संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य नव-नवतितमः (९९) पाठः ।
Here is a theme emphasizing quality than quantity, emphasizing right effort than wasteful effort.
The theme is –
Strive for quality, why go about beating the drum ? Just by putting a bell around its neck, you cannot sell a cow, which does not yield milk.
Let me try translating the theme into Sanskrit.
- Strive for quality, गुणेषु यत्नः कर्तव्यः
- why go about beating the drum ? ढौलवादनेन किम् ? न तु ढौलस्य वादनम् ।
- Just by putting a bell around its neck, गले घण्टां निहाय
- you cannot sell a cow, अशक्यं गां विक्रीतुम् । or न गौ विक्रीयते काचित् ।
- which does not yield milk. यदि सा दुग्धं न यच्छति
Looks like this can be set into a meter !
गले घण्टां निहायैव अदुग्धगोः किं विक्रयः ।।
I have attempted the most common meter अनुष्टुभ् छन्दः where number of syllables in each line should be 8.
To check, first let the verse be put in four quarters –
न तु ढौलस्य वादनम् । वर्णाः ८
गले घण्टां निहायैव । वर्णाः ८
अदुग्धगोः किं विक्रयः ।। वर्णाः ८
This is okay ! To get this I composed in the fourth quarter a somewhat complicated compound word अदुग्धगोः .
अदुग्धगोः = न दुग्धं यस्याः सा अदुग्धा (नञ्-बहुव्रीहिः) । अदुग्धा गौ इति अदुग्धगौ (कर्मधारयः) –> तस्याः इति अदुग्धगोः ।
गुणेषु यत्नः कर्तव्यः । वर्णाः ८
१-२-१ २-२ २-२-२ इति मात्राः ।
न तु ढौलस्य वादनम् । वर्णाः ८
१ १ २-२-१ २-१-२ इति मात्राः ।
गले घण्टां निहायैव । वर्णाः ८
१-२ २-२ १-२-२-(२) इति मात्राः ।
अदुग्धगोः किं विक्रयः ।। वर्णाः ८
१-२-१-२ २ २-१-२ इति मात्राः ।
The verse should also qualify the लक्षणपदम् – श्लोके षष्ठं गुरु ज्ञेयम् सर्वत्र लघु पञ्चमम् । द्विचतुः पादयोर्ह्रस्वं सप्तमं दीर्घमन्ययोः ।।
We have to check मात्रा of 5th, 6th and 7th syllables in each line.
- Value of the 6th syllable has to be २ in all lines. That is okay.
- Value of 5th has to be १ in all lines. It is not so in the first and fourth lines 😦 !
- Value of the 7th syllable has to be १ in 2nd and 4th lines and २ in first and third lines. Oh ! This is okay !!
The सुभाषितम् with me is –
गुणेषु क्रियतां यत्नः किमाटोपैः भयंकरैः |
विक्रीयन्ते न घण्टाभिः गाव: क्षीरविवर्जिता: ||
The first quarter गुणेषु क्रियतां यत्नः eliminates the flaw in mine. The word to be understood is क्रियताम्
क्रियताम् – “कृ” इति धातुः । तस्य कर्मणिप्रयोगे आज्ञार्थे प्रथमपुरुषे एकवचनम् ।
Other words worth studying are –
१ आटोपैः – “आटोप” (= pride, show of pride) इति पुल्लिङ्गि नाम । तस्य तृतीया विभक्तिः बहुवचनम् च ।
२ भयंकरैः – “(भयं करोति इति) भयंकर” (= frightening, threatening) इति विशेषणम् । अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि । तस्य तृतीया विभक्तिः बहुवचनम् च ।
३ विक्रीयन्ते – “वि + कृ” इति धातुः । तस्य कर्मणिप्रयोगे वर्तमानकाले प्रथमपुरुषे बहुवचनम् ।
- विगतं कृ इति विकृ !
४ घण्टाभि: – घण्टा (= bell) इति स्त्रीलिङ्गि नाम । तस्य तृतीया विभक्तिः बहुवचनम् च ।
५ गावः – गो (= cow) इति स्त्रीलिङ्गि नाम । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः बहुवचनम् च ।
६ क्षीरविवर्जिता: –
- ६-१ क्षीरं विवर्जितं यस्याः सा क्षीरविवर्जिता (बहुव्रीहिः) – ताः गावः
- ६-२ क्षीरम् – क्षीर (= milk) इति नपुंसकलिङ्गि नाम । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
- ६-३ विवर्जितम् – “वि + वृञ्-ज्” इति अदादि (२) सेट् आत्मनेपदी धातुः । वृजि वर्जने (= to cast off) । तस्य भूतकालवाचकं विशेषणम् “विवर्जित” (= to be cast off, to become devoid of) । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
- ६-४ क्षीरविवर्जिता = devoid of milk
अन्वयाः अनुवादाश्च –
- (मनुजेन) गुणेषु यत्नः क्रियताम् = Effort should be done (by man) at qualities
- भयंकरैः अाटोपैः किम् (भवति) ? = What is (achieved) by frightening (or threatening) prides ?
- क्षीरविवर्जिता: गाव: घण्टाभिः न विक्रीयन्ते = Cows that are devoid of milk do not get sold by bells (on their neck).
‘Bells’ to be put around the neck of a cow do not have to be in plural but that matches with ‘prides’ अाटोपैः which also is in plural.
First and third sentences are in passive voice.
Here are the two verses –
| सुभाषितम् गुणेषु क्रियतां यत्नः किमाटोपैः भयंकरैः | विक्रीयन्ते न घण्टाभिः गाव: क्षीरविवर्जिता: || |
mine गुणेषु यत्नः कर्तव्यः न तु ढौलस्य वादनम् । गले घण्टां निहायैव अदुग्धगोः किं विक्रयः ।। |
- I think न तु ढौलस्य वादनम् is better than किमाटोपैः भयंकरैः simply because भयंकर sounds to be too much negative an expression.
- ढौल the drum makes big sound because it is hollow inside. That brings to mind a proverb in Marathi, but with two Hindi words also in it – बडा घर, पोकळ वासा House is big, but makes a hollow living.
- There is a complicated compound word – क्षीरविवर्जिता: in the सुभाषितम् and अदुग्धगोः in mine. But the सुभाषितम् has no flaws of the meter.

I could not find any fault in the original structure as there is no difficulty in understanding the purport. But I find it difficult to find the same expression from your lines.
Please specify any fault technically in the original compound and structure. But I can see your explanation of the compound is wrong in बहुव्रीहि. It is the same idea expressed in other words by Vallabhacharya in his सुभाषितनीवी with explicit statement preferred to implied statement –
किमाटोपैः प्रयोजनम्?
in the first half. metrically “visandhi” is the flaw in your structure, अदुग्धगोः after the first paada, which is not allowed, though यति is a must in पादान्त which makes the original more perfect. Further, निहायैव is a new word form me and makes the whole second half unintelligible for me in spite of your explanation.
