Dr Sudhir Kaicker, former professor, computer science, in the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, came to Toronto’s Sheridan College to continue teaching the same subject.
India Abroad‘s Ajit Jain finds out how the Sheridan College computer science professor became passionate about teaching Sanskrit.
Tell us about the Sanskrit course you will teach at Sheridan College.
It’s a dream come true. We are starting a basic course from September 14 that will introduce the Devanagari alphabet and script as well as the formation of simple sentences. Depending on audience interest, advanced courses will be introduced.
We have one campus in Oakville and one in Brampton. I teach in both, but the Sanskrit courses will be in Brampton, where the South Asian community is concentrated.
Will you be teaching this through your e-tutorials?
Yes, it is called SanskritaPradipika. The idea was to make Sanskrit easier for even people who don’t know an alphabet of the Devanagari script. One of my JNU students, Jayant Shekhar, who is now an associate professor, computer science, at Vivekananda University, Meerut, helped me write the tutorial. It took us almost four years, 12 hours a day without a break, to write the program. But it doesn’t have the pronunciation.
Isn’t that a big handicap?
Yes, but the difficulty was the program already had six million lines. Had we put in sound, it would have become very, very long and would have taken forever to download, frustrating the users.
How did the idea of creating an e-tutor came to you?
I thought we could use the principles of Sanskrit grammar to devise a new computer programming language, but that initiative didn’t proceed the way I had hoped it would. Since we had learnt so much of Sanskrit, we thought why not write a tutorial to teach it.
If you want to enjoy the Indian culture, if you want to enjoy the Bhagavad Gita then you must know Sanskrit. You should be able to read the original scripture, original texts and documents to enjoy them. Today I am in a happy position to read the Gita and Ramayana [ Images ]. It gives me so much pleasure; I thought this should be communicated.
What are the results of your efforts to teach Sanskrit through the Internet?
Over 12,000 people have downloaded Sanskrita-Pradipika. I get calls all the time from people across the world who would like to learn Sanskrit on the Internet.
I have a Chinese student, Maureen Chiang, who has been learning from me for over two years. She can now recite shlokas beautifully. Twice a week, we connect on Skype and spend three hours on it. I have students from Germany, England, South Africa, two students from India, all learning Sanskrit on the Internet.

संस्कृत भाषायां संवादिनी वाद्यसंबंधे व्याखानं, वादनं, प्रदर्शनं च (Lecture-cum-Demonstration). संवादिनी भारतीय संगीतक्षेत्रे अतीव लोकप्रियं वाद्यं अस्ति । शास्त्रीय वा रागसंगीते अस्य बहुप्रमाणेन सर्वत्र उपयोगः अस्ति, तथा चित्रपटसंगीते, भक्तिसंगीते, भावसंगीते संवादिनी कार्यरता अस्ति। परन्तु यद्यपि संवादिन्यः भारतदेशे उपयोगः बहु अस्ति, तर्हि एतद् वाद्यं मूलतः भारतीयं नास्ति, किन्तु फ़्रान्सदेशीयमस्ति । अस्य वाद्यस्य इतिहासः अति विलक्षणः आश्चर्यकारकः वादग्रस्तश्च अस्ति । यथा - शतसंवत्सराणि एतद् वाद्यं भारतीयरागसंगीतक्षेत्रे कार्यरतमस्ति, तर्हि अद्यापि तस्य सर्वथा स्वीकृतिर्नास्ति। बहवः कलाकाराः गायनसंगे, गायकस्य आधाराय संवादिनीवादनं कुर्वन्ति, परंतु उत्तमाः स्वतन्त्रसंवादिनीवादनकाराः दुर्लभाः सन्ति । अस्मिन् कार्यक्रमे श्री केदार नाफडे महोदयः व्याख्यानं, वादनम्, प्रदर्शनं च कृत्वा श्रोतृणां मनोरञ्जनं करोति । विविधसंगीतप्रकारवादनं – रागसंगीतं, भक्तिसंगीतं, “धुन” तथा “ठुमरी” वादनम्, नाट्यसंगीतं, वाद्यसंबन्धे, वादनसंबन्धे इतिहाससंबन्धे च विश्लेषणं, प्रेक्षकैः सह प्रश्णोत्तराणि चैव एतस्मिन् कार्यक्रमे सन्ति । यदि भवान् अथवा भवतः संस्कृतसंस्था एतस्य कार्यक्रमस्य आयोजनं कर्तुमिच्छन्ति, तर्हि इमेल माध्यमेन श्री केदार नाफडे महोदयेन सह संपर्कः साधितव्यः।

ई-जर्नल से जुड़ेगा शहर का संस्कृत कॉलेज
संस्कृत को जनभाषा बनाने के लिए सूचना क्रांति के इस युग में विभिन्न प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं। इसी कड़ी में राजधानी स्थित संस्कृत कॉलेज ने भी पहल शुरू कर दी है। अब यहां के छात्रों के साथ ही प्राध्यापक भी संस्कृत ब्लॉगिंग और ऑनलाइन जर्नल में अपने लेख और विचार भेजेंगे।
हिंदी और अंग्रेजी में संप्रभुता को लेकर छिड़ी जंग के बीच संस्कृत को जनभाषा बनाने की बात कहां तक सफल होगी? यह तो वक्त ही बताएगा, लेकिन आईआईटी मुंबई के स्टूडेंट बिपिन कुमार झा ने कुछ अलग ही करने की ठान रखी है। सिटी भास्कर से विशेष बातचीत में श्री झा ने कहा कि वे राजधानी के संस्कृत कॉलेज के छात्रों को अपने साथ जोड़ना चाहते हैं। संस्कृत कॉलेज भी उनका साथ देने के लिए तैयार है। कुछ माह पहले ही संस्कृत में ब्लॉगिंग शुरू करने के बाद श्री झा ऑनलाइन जर्नल ‘जाह्नवी’ का भी प्रकाशन कर चुके हैं।
इस त्रैमासिक पत्रिका के प्रधान संपादक पूर्व शिक्षाविद् डॉ. सदानंद झा हैं। इसमें आस्ट्रेलिया के भाषाविद् प्रो. पोटा भी सहयोग दे रहे हैं। इसके अलावा सहायक संपादको एवं संरक्षकों में देश-विदेश के संकायाध्यक्षों, प्रोफेसरों व शोध छात्र शामिल हैं।
देश-विदेश के विद्वानों को जोड़ेंगे : संस्कृत कॉलेज की प्राचार्या मुक्ति मिश्रा ने इसकी सराहना करते हुए कहा कि संस्कृत के लिए इस तरह का प्रयास पूरे देश में होना चाहिए। कॉलेज में चल रही परीक्षाओं के बाद उन्होंने श्री झा को कॉलेज बुलाने की बात कही। श्री झा ने भी माना कि रायपुर के संस्कृत कॉलेज से जुड़कर वे अपने उद्देश्य को बेहतर राह दिखा सकते हैं। वे सबसे पहले संस्कृत कॉलेजों को अपने साथ जोड़ेंगे। उन्होंने कहा, इसके बाद ही वे देश-विदेश के अन्य कॉलेजों के छात्रों की ओर अपना रुख करेंगे। संस्कृत कॉलेज के सभी प्राध्यापकों ने इस पहल की सराहना की है। कॉलेज में छात्र संघ के अध्यक्ष नीलेश शर्मा ने कहा कि कोई तो है जो संस्कृत के विकास के लिए आगे आया। सूचना-तकनीक के इस युग में संस्कृत को भी ऑनलाइन पढ़ने-लिखने पर निश्चित तौर से इसका विकास होगा।
यह है उद्देश्य: ऑनलाइन पत्रिका के प्रकाशन के पीछे संस्कृत भाषा के प्रचार-प्रसार का उद्देश्य है। जाह्नवी पत्रिका में संस्कृत की वैकल्पिक भाषाओं के तौर पर अंग्रेजी और हिंदी का भी प्रयोग समझने के लिए किया गया है। इससे नए लोगों को अपनी अभिव्यक्ति के लिए एक प्लेटफार्म मिलेगा। देश में बहुत से ऐसे लोग हैं, जो संस्कृत के विकास के लिए कुछ करना चाहते हैं, लेकिन चाहकर भी कुछ नहीं कर पाते। ऐसे में संस्कृत ब्लॉगिंग और ई-जर्नल ने कुछ आस जगाने का काम किया है।
Sanskrit daily to be published from Vadodara

Lovers of Sanskrit language have a reason to rejoice. In a first in the state, Sanskrit scholars in M S University, Vadodara, are coming up with a Sanskrit daily.
The first copy of the newspaper — Sanskrit Vartaman Patram — will be launched in Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch, Palanpur, Modasa and Idar on Sunday.
The newspaper, which is the third Sanskrit newspaper in the country, aims to take the language of vedas to the readers. The other two Sanskrit newspapers are published in Mysore and Kanpur.
MSU professor Praful Purohit, who ideated the plan, said: “We have been thinking about launching a Sanskrit daily for the last three years. We used to publish a monthly magazine. We have planned to start with 1,500 copies and the cost will be at par with other dailies.”
